Linux is a free UNIX-type operating system originally created by Finnish software engineer Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. It has been available since the mid 1990's and is an operating system that has been causing a revolution in the world of computers. Developed under the GNU General Public Licence, the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone. It conforms to the POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface [for Unix]) standards which are also used by Apple Inc. in their Mac OS X operating system.

Linux is used today as the base operating system for a wide variety of applications. These range from embedded devices such as cell phones and handheld computers to large servers and complex control systems. It is widely used on the internet for routing network traffic, handling email and website serving. Many companies who's websites you visit today host their sites on Linux based servers.

LinSOLVE is the name we give to our range of Linux solutions. We can advise you if using one of our Linux solutions would provide any benefits over a standard Microsoft Windows based solution.

There are many advantages to using Linux as an operating system for business servers:

  • Low-cost, as Linux comes under the GNU General Public Licence most distributions are free of charge
  • Can run on lower specification hardware than Windows based operating systems
  • Very robust and stable
  • Excellent performance
  • High resistance to viruse attacks
  • Wide variety of server applications available (most of which are licenced under the GNU GPL agreement)
  • Many different Linux distributions are available offering a variety of optimised functionality
  • Highly customisable,  kernel can be optimised for hardware and type of use
  • Can be used to replace Windows based servers
  • Fully compatible with a Windows based network and file sharing
  • Ability to run virtual machine software to provide multiple servers using multiple operating systems on the same box

It is possible to use Linux on desktop based PC's as well. There are a variety of different Graphical User Interfaces (GUI's) available for Linux such as Gnome and KDE. These provide familiar graphics rich user envirnoments similar to Windows which allow users to easily access their data and applications. Offiice applications such as email clients, wordprocessors, spreadsheet programs, etc are all available and provide compatibility with their Microsoft Windows counterparts so data may be easily exchanged between the two.
